1920s Ludwig Black Beauty Snare

May 2, 2013

When I first got into vintage drums, it was way back before the internet. Drummers with a taste for the old school subscribed to newsletters and catalogs, and one of the premier mailers back then was Ned Ingberman’s out of rural Iowa. He’s still at it today at vintagedrum.com!

Anyway, I remember seeing all these listings for beautiful engraved black beauties from the 20s and 30s, and thinking, “these are the most beautiful drums ever made!” They still strike me as the Platonic Form of vintage drums. Even in those grainy black-and-white pics, those drums were clearly special. Only later did I get a chance to actual hear one, and I found that they sound as good as they look.

This particular example has a wonderful patina, with a gorgeous scroll pattern. Yes, it’s expensive, but not out of line for the market for these drums. The seller is accepting offers, also, so it’s probably worth a shot to put in a reasonable one!
